Product information

The CML Solid is the most recent charge controller from Phocos. It can be used in 12V and 24V systems, the controller automatically selects the correct system voltage. The electronics are protected from the environment by an appealing aluminum housing IP20 rated. This Phocos charge controller features a USB port, battery status display, alarm, and electronic protection against reverse battery polarity and reverse solar polarity. It allows for a State of Charge (SOC) or Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD) load. The LVD will trigger a pre-warning beep alarm to indicate the low charge of the battery.

Like other Phocos charge controllers, the CML Solid includes a temperature-compensated, four-stage PWM charging algorithm (float-main-boost-equalization); the controller is field-adjustable for sealed and vented lead-acid batteries. The battery status can be clearly monitored via three LEDs located on the front of the aluminum housing. The large terminals of the controller allow for cable up to 16mm2.

One very unique feature of the CML Solid is that external devices can be charge via the controller's built-in USB port.

Recommended use
The CMLsolid30 is the most robust PMW charge controller that Phocos has designed. It operates interchangeably with 12V and 24V solar panels. The 30A current capacitywill allow you to connect multiple panels up to 360W. Keep in mind that this is not an MPPT controller and the panels used have to be 12V or 24V nominal, this controller does not step down voltage and will not work with high voltage modules commonly used in residential applications. The electronics are entirely encapsulated and feature screw terminals for easy installation, it is an ideal controller for systems with exposure to the elements.

About Phocos
Phocos was founded in Germany in the 1980’s. The original founders were engineers and researchers who studied renewable energy at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences. They mainly focused on off-grid applications, for use in remote areas with no connection to the electric grid. As the demand for renewable energy sources grew in remote areas, so did their range of innovations. Phocos maintains a priority to develop eco-friendly, simple to use, energy saving products that are also durable with high-end technology. Applications of their products range from rural, recreational, residential, to industrial. Phocos North America is located in Tucson, AZ. Phocos also has 12 other offices around the world.

Sizing guide

Quick guide for selecting the right charge controller

Each time you charge deep cycle batteries with solar panels, it's necessary to use a charge controller in the circuit to protect the battery from over charging, and in some instances from over discharging. The only exception is when using solar panels smaller than 5W. Choosing the most suitable charge controller is simple and only requires two steps:

Step 1 - Voltage selection
Select a charge controller that is compatible with the system voltage. The standard configurations are 12, 24, and 48 volts. If you are wiring your batteries for 24 volts you need a charge controller that is rated at 24 volts.

Some controllers are voltage specific, meaning that the voltage cannot be changed or substituted. Other more sophisticated controllers include a voltage auto-detect feature, which allows it to be used with different voltage settings.

Step 2 - Current capacity

Select a charge controller that can handle the maximum output current of the solar panel (or solar array). The maximum possible current that a PV panel can generate is the “short circuit current,” indicated as Isc in the panel’s label or specs sheet.

It’s recommended to include a safety factor for isolated events as well. For example, a solar panel with a Isc of 7.89 amp could potentially produce an extra 25% on a sunny day with very clear snow pack. (additional light reflected off the snow). This results in a possible maximum of 9.86 amp (7.89 x 1.25 = 9.86 amp). In this case, a 10 amp charge controller would be recommended.

Below you will find a quick guide to choosing the proper charge controller for several popular solar panel sizes.
